China is at the centre of academic and policy debates about the future of the multilateral trading system established under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The panel discussed some of the most systemic and controversial issues relating to China, the world trading system and beyond.
The Young Scholars Workshop is joined by Associate Prof Wei Yin (SWUPL), Assistant Prof (Mandy) Meng Fang (CityU of HK) and Assistant Prof Luyao Che (CUPL) to discuss some longstanding or emerging challenges faced by the WTO: developing country status and special and differential treatment, recent development of regulation of state-owned enterprises under the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, and trade and sustainable development and China’s practices.

Associate Professor Weihuan Zhou
Dr Weihuan Zhou is Associate Professor and Director of Research at Faculty of Law and Justice, UNSW Sydney. He publishes in the field of international economic law, particularly the nexus between international trade law and China. His work has appeared in all top journals in the field and in some of the best journals in the broader field of international law. His publications are cited widely, including in European Parliament briefings and reports of the Parliament of Australia and Australia’s Productivity Commission. Currently, he is co-Secretary of the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL). Prior to UNSW law, he was a trade and commercial lawyer and a legal consultant at the WTO.

Assistant Professor Meng Fang
Assistant Professor Meng Fang joined City University of Hong Kong, School of Law as Assistant Professor in July 2020. Assistant Professor Fang held post-doctoral fellowships at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and National University of Singapore. She obtained her PhD from CUHK, her LLM from University College London and Bachelor of Management and Bachelor of Laws degrees from Chongqing University. Her research interests include international economic law, World Trade Organization Law, climate change governance, energy law and international environmental law. She is currently working on the legal issues relating to China’s natural gas sector reform and the trade-related issues relating to renewable energy development and the transition to a low carbon economy. Her research appears in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of World Trade, Journal of World Investment and Trade, Chinese Journal of Environmental Law and Climate Law. Her work also appears in edited collections published by Cambridge University Press, Routledge and Springer.
Assistant Professor Luyao Che
Assistant Professor Luyao Che is an assistant professor and a supervisor for master students at the School of International Law, China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). She holds a Master in Laws degree from Renmin University of China, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Nottingham. She was a visiting scholar at at the University of Dundee in 2019. Her current research focus is the legal implications of contemporary state-directed economic institutions and their impacts on the development of the international economic order. Her recent research interests include the legal embodiment of the US-China trade frictions, the reform of the world trading system, and the prospect of the “Belt and Road” Initiative (BRI).
Associate Professor Wei Yin
Dr Wei Yin (Ph.D., LLM, LLB) is an Associate Professor of School of International Law, Southwest University of Political Science and Law. She is also a Research Fellow of China-ASEAN Legal Research Centre. Her research focuses on international economic law, investment law, international regulation on SOEs, and Belt and Road Initiative and sustainable development. She worked as the research intern, research collaborator and advisor of several think tanks. She has participated in research projects funded by universities, think tanks and government department. She has published several academic papers in international peer-reviewed journals and invited to present her research at various international academic conferences and seminars.
