On Tuesday 7 May, Professor Angela Zhang from The University of Hong Kong delivered a hybrid seminar at UNSW Law & Justice, titled “High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy”. Professor Deborah Healey, co-director of CIBEL Centre welcomed attendees and introduced Professor Zhang.

Professor Zhang presented insights from her newly released book, “High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy”. She introduced the dynamic pyramid model, the central theme of the book, for understanding Chinese regulatory governance. She analysed the impact of the recent tech crackdown on the administrative state, the competitive landscape, and the global rivalry in technology. She also explored the broader application of this analytical framework to other forms of policy challenges encountered by Chinese government in recent years.

Following the thought-provoking presentation, Professor Zhang engaged in a Q&A session with in-person attendees.

Angela Zhang is the author of "Chinese Antitrust Exceptionalism: How the Rise of China Challenges Global Regulation" (Oxford, 2021) (named one of the Best Political Economy Books of 2021 by ProMarket). Angela's second book, "High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy," was released by Oxford University Press in March 2024. Her full biography and publications are available here
