Navigating BRI Disputes: Understanding Key Actors and Practical Strategies

CIBEL member Associate Professor Kun Fan co-authored an article titled "Navigating BRI Disputes: Understanding Key Actors and Practical Strategies" with Dr Zhijin (Donna) Huang, Dr Anran Zhang and Angela Zhang in the latest edition of in CDR Essential Intelligence - Belt & Road Initiative 2025. 

This piece delves into the complexities of dispute resolution within the BRI, focusing on the pivotal roles played by states, fund providers, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and private enterprises. It offers practical insights and strategies for effectively managing and resolving these disputes, ensuring that practitioners are well-equipped to protect their clients’ interests in this dynamic and challenging environment. 

The research on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is crucial for understanding the complex dynamics of international dispute resolution in one of the most ambitious global infrastructure programs. With over 149 countries involved, BRI disputes often include multiple stakeholders such as governments, SOEs, and private entities, operating across diverse legal, political, and cultural landscapes. This research contributes to scholarship by offering strategic insights into managing these disputes through proactive conflict management, mediation, and arbitration, highlighting the importance of legal frameworks tailored to large-scale international projects.
