A journal article authored by the Co-Director of UNSW Law’s China International Business and Economic Law (CIBEL) Centre Professor Heng Wang, titled “China’s Approach to the Belt and Road Initiative: Scope, Character and Sustainability” has ranked as a highly cited article of the Journal of International Economic Law (JIEL) published by the Oxford with free access available on the website.
Published in Volume 22, Issue 1 of the journal in March 2019, this article conducts a systematic legal analysis of China’s approach to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is under-researched in current literature. With a functional approach to defining the initiative, Professor Wang explored three qualities to China’s approach to the BRI and came up to the conclusion that maximised flexibility is the key legal characteristic of the BRI.
“There seems to lack an overall and systematic legal analysis of China’s BRI approach, particularly regarding three questions: what is the proper scope of the BRI? What is China’s approach to the BRI and its character? Is China’s approach to the BRI viable?” Professor Wang said in a previous interview with CIBEL in late 2018.
“[The study] helps to reflect on the present and future of China’s BRI approach, and its implications,” he said.
This research output has an Altmetric Attention Score of 34, which is in the top 5% of all of the nearly 16 million research outputs scored by Altmetric and is ranked in the 7th place among the 291 outputs from the Journal of International Economic Law. In addition, this output is at the 93rd percentile and 80th percentile compared to outputs of the same age and outputs of the same age and source, respectively.
